Many people are familiar with the fresh herb tinctures from Bioforce, the fresh herb medicine company. Their founder Alfred Vogel developed this concept after observing that his patients responded better to herbal remedies made from freshly harvested herbs and Bioforce has respected this principle of manufacture for over 40 years. Herbs are processed at their factory in Roggwil, Switzerland within hours of harvesting, ensuring that the full spectrum of active ingredients is captured in the highest possible amounts.
By growing their own plants organically, using genetically pure seed, they have a high quality of raw plant material. Their fresh herbs are free from contamination by other plant species and from the presence of pesticide and insecticide residues, and therefore do not need to be fumigated or irradiated.
In clinical practice, many naturopaths and therapists have experienced the difference that freshly harvested herbal preparations make in their patients. This intuitive and clinical experience has been supported by the work of scientists such as Martin Tobler, who has shown that fresh herb preparations contain more of the active ingredients and, in addition, are more stable.
Whilst Vogel worked with fresh herb tinctures in his clinic, he recognised that many people preferred the convenience of a tablet when using herbal remedies. Long before he retired, Vogel worked on a unique process that enabled Bioforce to produce tablets from the well-known fresh herb tinctures. This became the basis for their Echinacea tablets - the most popular natural remedy for colds and flu in many parts of the world. A number of other fresh herb tablets followed and this includes Hypericum, Aesculus, Menosan and Devil's Claw.
The unique process utilises the familiar Bioforce fresh herb tincture as the starting point. By evaporating most of the fluid portion, a concentrated liquid is obtained. This is carried out under low pressure and at a temperature of around 40°C. Those who have studied biology at school will recognise that this is very slightly higher than normal body temperature.
The concentrate obtained is then mixed with substances that allow the shape of the tablets to be formed, known as 'fillers' or excipients. For Echinaforce fresh herb tablets, this is principally lactose (sugar derived from milk).
With this method, Bioforce is able to produce tablets which retain all the active ingredients present in the tincture, but in a more convenient solid form.
