Rhodiola is an effective herbal extract that works as an adaptogen to help manage stress. Rhodiola has six groups of chemical compounds that appear to work by inhibiting the breakdown of seratonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, thereby facilitating the transport and levels in various brain structures. The effects help memory, learning, attention, and sleep, while reducing fatigue and stress. Studies also show that rhodiola has a positive influence on the cardiopulmonary system, apparently increasing the chemicals that provide energy to the muscles of the heart, improving strength and endurance. As an adaptogen, rhodiola has neuroendocrine effects that improve sexual function in males, normalize women's menstrual cycles, and enhance thyroid function without causing hyperthyroidism. For people who tend to be anxious or agitated, rhodiola may be better taken earlier in the day as it may interfere with sleep.
